Play Up!

This week one of my artist, client, friends shared an email with me featuring a blog post. The post incorporates a quote- “If you want to improve your game, make sure the person on the other side of the net is better than you. Play up.” This is not only true in sports, it's true in almost everything an especially in art.

Artists ask me all the time about—finding their voice. My first thought is they have to want to do the work. Many times crafters travel from one workshop to another learning some great techniques, but never work it enough to make it their own. In the 90's a truly great artist gave me some of the best advice ever. She said you learn a technique- go back to your studio and use it over and over and over. Do a piece and another and another and another until what you learned evolves into your own work. The first year she shared that advice I created 125 pieces from a technique I had learned. That was the beginning of an inspiring and eventful art career.

Playing up! is a good way to advance your art game. You don't have to change what you are doing in art in a major way. Just consider how you work, where would you like to be in your art and make it happen. Read about marketing, showing, selling and creating art.

iPhone 5s Extreme Detail Photographs

Playing with a new lens (olloclip macro 10x and 15x) for my iPhone 5s. With this lens I am able to get wonderful detail shots of my wire work to blend back into images later.  Just a few shots here as I work my way through looking to see what this lens will do. Looking forward to creating different types of textures and layers to embellish images for printing on my alternative surfaces.

An Interesting Way to Use Crochet!

Awhile ago my husband and I were walking around a shopping center in Scottsdale Arizona. Someone had added crochet elements to the lights on one street of the Center. Check this out—of course with the hot season starting soon I can imagine what will happen to these:)

Love this, though, could be a wonderful outdoor installation with yarns that can withstand the weather better.

Here it is the first day of 2014 and already day two elsewhere in the world.

A New Year seems to be the time to take a look, make resolutions and just plain make yourself crazy for the rest of the year to accomplish what you think you should.

For this year my plans are pretty big and all of them involve creativity and moving forward with my art, creating online workshops, digital printing new and innovative alternative surfaces and writing about my process. Truly something good is about to happen as each day moves forward in this year or any year. 

Think about creativity and going for the joy of it. There is something about the creative process that is soothing, exhilarating, sometimes frustrating—but always the place to be. You are creative all over your life whether it involves art or not. Each and every day is a new adventure!!! Embrace it.

Be amazing in 2014 just because you are—

This manipulated photograph was taken in February 2006 in Yosemite National Park.

Enjoying hiking through the snow I paused at a section next to the Merced River. This beautiful area showed a reflection of El Capitan with the added interest of frozen spots on the tool of the river. My  photo was altered in Photoshop.

iPhone and iPad Art

Introducing my new video composed of around 112 images taken on my iPhone and manipulated with apps on my iPhone or my iPad. Some of the images are drawings and composites created on my iPad. I am experimenting with videos as a wonderful way to teach. Although in this video there are no words there is plenty of opportunity to show a path through the creation of images and document what tools were used. 

For me it is impossible to track the exact path each image took. Most of the iPhone apps don't have layers or undo—you just keep following your intuition. Creating on these devices is truly in the moment. The best I can do is give you a  list of what apps were used in the process of working on the images. What magic happens in between is there, but not able to be recreated. 

Some of the apps used: Photoshop Touch, Percolator, Wurm, Paper 53, Sketch Book Pro, Type Drawing, Toon Paint HD, DXP (Double Exposure), Fluid FX and Photo Tropedelic.

Digital Journaling on my iPad

Part of a collection of 100 iPad/iPhone images currently in process. My work flow started with my original drawing in Paper 53>layered over an image (created  in Fluid FX) in DXP>retouched in Sketchbook Pro and last the quote was added in Type Drawing. 

This was image created for an

Getting towards the end of this beverage can assemblage. The piece contains digital prints on beverage cans—looped and attached with crocheted wire.

Printed Cheesecloth

Digital print on cheesecloth. The cheesecloth was lightly felted with some wool to build up the texture. This is among some of the tests I am doing to decide what I want to pursue. Felt is an amazing surface when digitally printed.

Tiny Squares

These tiny squares from digitally printed beverage cans are on their way to a larger piece. The spontaneity of their cluster is beautiful in itself.

Synthetic Textures

Digital printing on synthetic fabric. Three layers are shrunk and crinkled when melted. The layers are put together with wire pieces piercing through the synthetic fabric—Beads are strung on the wire an pieces of digitally printed beverage cans are added to the wires. This piece is in a private collection located in Toronto Canada. 

Northern California Forest

Trees and forest textures are the subject of most of my artwork. This extremely textural bark is exquisite. Patterns are created easily from these and used in other parts of my art.
